The First Step is Decolonizing Your Own Mind

The colonies in Canada brought with them colonial ideas and the restricted, repressed, ignorant thinking we still see today. At the top of this list is "The Indian Act " established in Canada's early days as a country. The Act was not just a piece of legislation, it also represented a massive, jagged, rip straight through Canada’s moral fabric; this colonial law was nothing but an apartheid system designed to oppress and control Indigenous peoples from the beginning, and over years its influence only spread and grew tentacles, weaving its way into hearts and minds. The dark stain of its grip only grew over the years, it never diminished. The legacy of The Indian Act has caused profound harm to Indigenous communities, stripping away their autonomy, culture, health, and well-being. It destroyed families over generations and formed the systemic racism every Indigenous Canadian has had to battle every day. It has cost all Canadians the loss of nearly two hundred years of experiencing the rich Indigenous culture that would have reverberated across the nation and shaped the land we have become today. Until we confront every facet and recognize the racist divide in its entirety, it will still live on in the racially divided thoughts and beliefs that may not even be part of conscious awareness. The first step truly is decolonizing your own mind.
