Strategic political division is not just an unfortunate byproduct of democracy—it can be a deliberate tool used to fracture solidarity among ordinary people. Division may be deliberately encouraged or manipulated by powerful interests (such as political elites, corporate actors, or ruling classes) in order to undermine collective action by the general population. The more the population is fragmented, the less able it is to demand real accountability or systemic change. Recognizing this strategy is the first step toward resisting it.
